Soot Sprite Truffles: A Whimsical Treat from the Spirit World!

2 min read

Inspired by the mischievous and endearing creatures from Studio Ghibli's beloved films, "My Neighbour Totoro" and "Spirited Away", our Soot Sprite Truffles are a delightful fusion of dark chocolate decadence and playful charm.

I have been making these truffles for years as my children and I adore the charm of the Ghibli movies and I like to bring that touch of enchantment into the kitchen. Join me on a journey into the Spirit World as we explore the creation of these delightful truffles, from their rich and indulgent chocolatey centre to their whimsical exterior. Whether you're planning a Studio Ghibli movie night or simply seeking a magical culinary adventure, our Soot Sprite Truffles are sure to captivate your imagination and your taste buds.

These adorable treats are perfect for fans of the film and anyone with a sweet tooth looking to add a touch of magic to their day.

Ingredients

  • 200g Dairy-Free Dark Chocolate (finely chopped)

  • 100 ml Plant-Based Milk (we used oat)

  • 1 tablespoon Caster Sugar

  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

  • 2 tablespoons black vermicelli sprinkles for decorating

  • Confectionary eyes for decorating

Method

  1. Put the chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl. Tip the milk, sugar and vanilla into a small saucepan, then bring to the boil over a medium heat, stirring occasionally.

  2. Pour the hot milk mixture over the chocolate, leave to sit for 1 min, then stir until the chocolate has melted and the mix is smooth. Cover and chill for 4 hours until set.

  3. Roll teaspoons of the mixture into balls using your hands, then transfer to a small baking tray or plate – you may like to wear gloves. You should have about 8-12 balls.

  4. Put the vermicelli sprinkles on a shallow plate, and roll the chilled truffles in it until well-coated, tapping off any excess, if needed.

  5. Add your confectionary eyes to your truffles to bring the soot sprites to life,

  6. Chill until you’re ready to devour.

VVitch Tip

  • These truffles will keep in the fridge for 4 days - they may not last that long though!

  • If you struggle finding confectionary eyes you can make some by melting white chocolate and putting small circles onto baking parchment. Once the white chocolate has dried add a pupil by putting a drop of melted dark chocolate on the white chocolate circle.

  • If you want to get even more creative you can make some arms with icing on the truffles.

  • You could also put colourful star sprinkles on the truffles to mimic the star treats they eat in the film

  • For vegan sprinkles I highly recommend Baking Time Club.

Thank you for joining me on this culinary journey through the mystical world of Studio Ghibli and the creation of our Soot Sprite Truffles. Until next time, may your days be filled with sweetness, wonder, and a touch of whimsy!

Blessed be,
